Stupidstitions (Also, Pay it Forward!)

Are you superstitious?  I am.  Totally.  I was raised that way.  When I was a kid I played softball, and my dad, a superstitious softball player himself, taught me how to use my dressing routine to deal with keeping a winning streak or breaking a losing one.  Not even kidding.  I had to keep track of the order in which I put on the pieces of my uniform:  socks, underwear, stirrups, pants, jersey, hat.  (Yes, we wore stirrups and real softball pants.  I played in the days when a uniform meant something, dammit).  If we won that day, I got dressed in the same order the next time.  If we lost, I had to make sure I made at least one change.

I'm not sure if this was the same year my team went 0-16 or not.

Anyway, I'm still superstitious.  I will not speak of a good run of luck for fear of breaking it.  When I was on pager duty for Job 1 a few weeks back, a major change was made on our system & everyone expected I'd get hammered with calls the first night.  Instead, I got zero calls. And I wouldn't talk about it.  When I was forced to (like when my boss asked me how many calls I'd gotten), I answered in a whisper and said "We can discuss it further next week".

There was one thing I was SO AFRAID of doing at Job 2 over the holidays, that I never did.  And I still will not tell anyone what it was, even though we're well past the time frame where it is a real risk.

I'm not much for good luck charms, or omens, though.  I don't carry anything for luck, and though I have been shat upon by half a dozen birds over the last 2 years, I have not won the lottery or had any other stroke of good fortune.

A couple weeks ago I won Erica's Pay it Forward contest, and I was all, YAY!  And then I was all "Oh crap, that means it's my turn to host one now!"  I mean, I knew that going in, but I never win these things, so I wasn't too worried about it.  I think I'm ready to deal with it now, though.  I've got luck on my brain lately so it feels right. So here we are!

If you don't know how PIF works, it's really very simple & kind of neat.  To enter, just leave me a comment by 5PM Thursday 6/2  (Don't know what to say?  How about telling me your favorite superstition or good luck charm?).  I'll randomly choose a winner, and if you win, you'll hold a contest on your blog, and the winner of that one hosts their own, and so on.  Hence the name.

What will you win?  I... have no freaking idea.  A care package of yet-to-be-determined fun stuff!  Maybe a lucky charm, or maybe some chocolate to help cope with a run of bad luck.  Or both!

Good luck!

There'd better not be a rule that says I can't win the one you're hosting because you won mine.

Also, I promise to get your package together this week. For realz.

You could remember what order you dressed in week to week? Dude, that is impressive.

I can't say I'm particularly superstitious though I do have just stupid notions about some things and I still close my eyes to make a wish when I blow an eyelash off my finger.

Close eyes when blowing an eyelash off a finger, what??? I have all kinds of rituals. Closets must be closed when not in use, otherwise the monsters will come out and I will just not feel right. I give blood to pay it forward and protect my loved ones. My coffee cup lid where I drink cannot be on the seam of the cup, that's just distracting. That's all I can come up with, but I'm sure I'll think of more.

Pick me, pick me!

Well, I could use a win. I think I'm too lazy to be superstitious. I don't want to put any effort in to it.

I wish on my eyelashes too thgou, so...
